Life and art (artist) after “the end of art” and aesthetic daily life

                                                                                             Kwak, Young-bin

Art critic/Ph.D. in Film studies

1.   The artist’s earlier work A Project That Makes One Look Like an Artist (2008) is a seemingly simple conceptof work of having general participants to act out their definition of“ artists.”Similar to the artist’s few artworks afterwards, it looks like a “Participatory Art”or become visible in a form of“ Relational Aesthetics”or maintain a long avantgarde quest of “the border between life and art” in a somewhat anachronic way.

However, as it goes for all “origins,”the destiny gets modified or elaborated or (re)defined by later works, and in that sense, it comes (back) at the latest. From that “post-exhibition perspective,”what does this work mean? This question is important in a sense that the core of the work by Minwook AN is not something visible but“ the time point.”

2.   Simply put, AN’s work is an attempt of investigating the existence method of life and art (artist) from a “(future) perfect tense”time point, when the art is universalized or when the avantgarde plan of combining art and life is already shrewdly and plainly completed

This statement looks simple, but it actually presents complicated problems. That is because it touches the issue of “time.”In other words, if “post- “ is a problem, then do all the work of other artists done in the later time also fall into that “post- “ category? If not, then what is the standard of the classification? Unfortunately, this is not a place for discussion of those serious problems. Considering such time and spatial limitation, it is convenient start from Groys’suggestion that the project called “anesthetization”is not one but two and is classified as anesthetization“ design”and“ art.” According to Groys, the anesthetization project of avantgarde art on daily life is already completed. Despite of the logical opposition that “the substantially unfulfilled area still exists,”such proposition stands strong because the idea of “changing the world”in a broad sense is the basis of the avantgarde project. Daily life through art, in other words, the idea that “anesthetization”of life refers to changing or at least modifying the world and ultimately making the life abundant through this. He calls this “anesthetization of design”by separating it from (anesthetization plan of) “art,” as he provocatively tore down in his first work published exactly 30 years ago in 1988 and it is certain that an example of 20th century legend is the 20th century Soviet Union presented at the historical exhibition using the people by “whole artist”named Stalin.

Of course, he does not craft the whole process afterwards, but it can be seen as a connection of plans that (re) define art by making -temporarily- the relationship itself, which is the society (sociability) that is imploded along with the (capitalist) anesthetization process, which is so-called“ relationship anesthetization” that once overruled a generation (in the past tense) by Nicolas Bourriaud after reaching the practically and potentially anesthetized daily life along with lateralization of an accelerated artistic experience through image saturation, which is the awareness or experience of global outbreak that was named as “new life of postmodern sensation”by Fredric Jameson.

AN’s work artificially located itself in this time point to raise the following questions. In other words, what is art in the time of “post-end of art”that has already come without “melancholy of success,”KakaoTalk messages, and even DMs? Or what can it be? And what is the life then? Or what can it be?

3.   An presents such sensation of “ end” as a disappointing completion or boring fulfillment and surplus sensation, and it has been variated into, for example, an imaginary conversation at a cafe with an artist who “retired”and has much time on his hand his name is Van Gogh”ars cafe (2012) or it is mediated by allegory of surplus light that requires shading net or a decrease of light intensity or the lack of such For A While, The Way into Darkness, 借養莫(Cha Yang Mak), a type that is surplus to the place it is placed in or provides unnecessary factors, like Wi-Fi and airconditioning that only work in the container built next to the Nanji camping site ars The Office of Useless Art (2014) or a type of circulating the air and lighting the dead space between the roof and ceiling of the exhibit and not using the space after all Plan B Stage ( 2016).

4.   In fact, the artist who took the role of waiter in arsviAn Night was often not recognized as an “artist,” and this looks similar to Andrea Fraser’s performance(1989) of acting Philadelphia art museum docent and the “anesthetization of relationship”work by Tiravanija, who distributed noodles to participants. However, as I emphasized earlier, this kind of confusion and interpretation appears to be “anachronistic”when it is put in the relationship between other works. What is the significant point that is Common Bar, Cafe Nunji, and Openstudio. First, Common Bar is a space he created with Anna Han at the 12th Nanji Art show <Show! Room!> that opened for 10 days at the SeMA NANJI RESIDENCY, Sangam-dong, Seoul in April 2018. He did not avoid having general audience, but it was specially designed to have “a good time with artists.”This space is related to “Cafe Nunji,”as it was made like a “bar”to help artists who “feel like they are isolated in Nanji”to have “a good time with fellow artists,”and the dead space of the 2nd floor of the studio, in the outdoor space right in front of his room with Artists PARK Kyung Ryul, YEOM Ji-hee, and KyoungJae CHO is also basically a space for renting artists.

The main idea is the special status of these spaces. When apply the (anachronistic) binary fission called “art and daily life,”these spaces all lose their stance. These are spaces for artists who make“ arts”but are not a space for general sense of art or “work.”However, at the same time, this is not a space of “daily life”that is classified exclusively from art. This is a space called SeMA NANJI RESIDENCY, where artists every year temporarily stay and is not where all artists fully spend their“ daily life”of every day.

At the same time, Openstudio that he made for “open studio”is a work that appropriately presents the characteristics of time and space. With an excuse that “he had not much to show since he mostly does work of on-site installation”and by combining the characteristic of the open studio in showing something with Instagram, he tried to make objects like desks, chairs, and books used in residency life as square, but because of the high ceiling and narrow width of the studio’s structure, the objects were made into big rectangular structure in the size of 85 x 250 x 254.4 (cm). For example, the question of “(how) is this an art work?”refers to rough and anachronistic question of does the physical and administrative space of “residency,”where objects are contained and the work is exhibited, belongs to “art”or “daily life,”and as we have pointed out previously, An clearly separates by weaving the time sensation of “post- “classification based on the approach of “combining “art”and “daily life””at a spatial level of “art creative center.”

Materials are different, but Master Baby (2017) is also an interesting work in this sense. The artist who happened to stay in Hongcheon, Gangwondo, where there are many military bases, thought of himself who was also serving the military 10 years ago and made the art work with a wish that“ it would be nice if people who visited the art museum near the military base by chance saw the work.”This work is basically a 1-person booth for solders to masturbate. The pink military pattern looks like Angel Solder series by LEE Yongbaek, but the similarly instantly goes away through the shiny LED title or the advertisement board Master Baby outside the booth and the detailed masturbation products, such as chair, trashcan, wet tissue, and lubricant gel. It looks childish in a sense or from a point of view with the globalized gender problem, it looks like the inside joke extending from what Eve Sedgwick criticized of homosociality of males, but the core of this work is almost irrelevant from such superficial level. The main theme of this work is in the level of materialization of time and spatial exceptionality, similar to what we observed earlier. The pink booth with flamboyant LED lighting stands there like a shouting advertisement board, and once the light inside is on, the sign that says “ENGAGED”outside the booth turns on, which makes it impossible to do an intimate activity like masturbation. Moreover, this booth’s target or subject of consolation are Korean soldiers, who exist for 20 months and disappear or are “ temporary existence” that is (continuously) replaced by others, strengthens the similarly with the rectangular Openstudio work as well as the artists in the residency program who are replaced every year, as we have looked at earlier. In other words, this strange private space that is open and even explicit is a mate of the temporary space called “residency,”in which life that is not completely private or public or artistic or daily continues for a certain time period, separated from the so-called general public’s “daily life.”

5.   AN’s other works also come clear once they are seen with the basis of setting the problem of such“ time point” or“ time difference.” For example, let’s take a look at Bow House (2015) by an artist who came back home after studying abroad and renovated the old house of his dog. This is of course based on German “Bauhaus,”but as the humor that title discreetly presents the combination of dog and“ bow” is bowwow, meaning the “dog barking sound” shows, it seems irrelevant to the intention of “anachronically”maintaining the plan. This is because the artistic idealism of “reality improvement”is already completed, and the artist displaces this to a level of “the reality improvement for dog”instead of“ human reality” and takes a look at it from the “dog’s perspective again or asks for his “agreement”or “confirmation” which presents practically impossible utopia and makes the utopian plan of“ Bow House”an anachronical one. As such, the spatial and timely “transposition”or anachronical sensation transforms into an animal doll with an iPad that makes real dogs useless, a portable shelf for work located in the gallery D.I.Y (2015), or baskets and basketball installed too low in the gallery again for a real game Participation-Basket-Ball(2017) and sometimes melt into the language area like previously mentioned Cafe Nunji or <Could Be Me Could Be You, Sophisticated Map>(August 2018).

6.     In this sense, the interesting point of one of the artist’s recent works The Agreed-Kidnapping-Play (2016) is found in putting the consensus and common sensationbased sensus communis to“ con-test”with participants at a visual level, which is the blind spot of sensus communis and “relationship anesthetization”that was barely supporting the previously works. For example, the participants of this work under “consensus”pointed out the uncomfortable vehicle or unfriendliness of assistants in the feedback. However, was this not agreed upon? Did they not give a “consensus”for“ kidnapping?”If not, then how far does their “consensus”go to? How much “comfortability” and homey feeling make this even a “kidnapping incidence?”Through the simple fact that participants had to be blindfolded throughout the event, the naive proposition of “relationship anesthetization”called participation for which other works of the artist approached despite of confusion comes into question here. In other words, a description like “the people who were previously passive or limited spectators were fully participated in this work” is impossible. By paradoxically imploding this kind of idealism of “participation”that “relationship anesthetization” composes of through “exchange”and “consensus,”An teases the idealism of artistic or social function and even makes it uncomfortable. The parts are that we emphasized through cases of Common Bar, Cafe Nunji, and Master Baby, in other words, the problems of “art and daily life,”through which they look like they are still “participating”or the issues of “ relationship anesthetization” and “community”clearly appear to be anachronical with this work. AN’s works stand on the (unconscious) stance that art and daily life are already combined and the historical sensation of such disappointing “anesthetization of daily life”and what daily life and art after the “anesthetized daily life”are incarnated in the vector called surplus and useless. In particular, “Four things missing something”that materialize the meaning of “less”without “home”with clear stairs and walls included in <The City of Homeless>(2017) does not “socialize”the problem of useless and surplus as social phenomenon of young adult generation or workers but humbly pictures as a historical recognition that “art”has become such“ less”existence, meaning that the“ home”-like mission of art called “grafting into daily life”is already completed and has become “a transparent existence despite its existence.”

In front of the plain-looking works by AN, the “art(works)”that lazily change the envelope of pure art or the contemplating poses of trying to“ graft”art and daily life are likely to appear as sincere farce. Therefore, let’s check the place and time that everyone (think they) are standing at. Let’s check one more time (again) just in case.
