--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Minwook An has been producing performance pieces which often presuppose participation of spectators. It means that his practice is a kind of stage completed by final involvement of the viewers and their existence within exhibitions or installations triggers the time of the stage to flow. As part of ‘ars Project’, An has presented various attempts from <ars Cafe I> (2012) transforming an architecture into a performance venue by sharing conversation with visitors in an empty space temporarily converted into a cafe, to <arsbian Night> (2016) which shifted an exhibition space into a nightclub where the artist himself played a role of a waiter arranging spontaneous meetings between people who attended the event. ‘ars’ is an art company established in order to prevent artists’ unemployment. Its prototypical work, <ars Cafe I> (2012), has developed into either a stage encouraging viewers’ participation such as <ars English Art School> (2014) which provided a space allowing only speaking English or a space interconnected with different projects so as to support other artists’ performance. The latter’s appropriate example is <ars Cafe II> (2014) and this case is more similar to an employment agreement rather than a simple collaboration.

Having paid attention to soldiers who account for the large number of economic population of Hong-Cheon village, Minwook An constructed a private space for them to masturbate, <Master Baby> (2017). This installation has difficulty increasing frequency and density of the audience’s participation comparing to An’s previous works. It is obvious that the actual number of the activities of the people attended for approximately twenty days is not easily measured and aggregated. Thus, the work assigns a sense of identity to each soldier rather than forming relationship. In this context, a question emerges; is it possible that an equation, ‘masturbation=personal/private space’ is compatible with a premise, ‘exhibition=public space’?

Although the structure adopts the camouflage pattern, its color consists of pink tone spectrums complimented by green which immediately reminds of the military. This could be the artist’s joke to metaphorically refer to Pink Factory residency he attended in Hong-Cheon, however, this approach shows An’s attempt to subvert the symbolism of a violent organization. Its white and isolated/independent interior space blocked by partitions seems to suggest a glimpse of an individual’s time. Despite some prepared items such as a bottle of gel, toilet paper and a litter basket with a plastic bag, there is not a certain physical medium to lead masturbation inside the structure. Above all, the superficial frame of the work, ’bright room’, as a public space not only indicates and separates soldiers as a particular group, but also distinguishes and estranges them. It consequently performs a function disturbing the soldiers to have a moment of preoccupation instead of giving them a comfortable experience. According to An’s explanation, this installation conveys a critical point of view on the military place where only a personal area is not approved.

For soldiers, this installation offers two possible choices: passing through the given space under a psychological pressure or achieving their right to pleasure through a physical behavior. For other visitors who are not soldiers, it is an indicator of impossibility or an object of observation evoking a sense of curiosity. In spite of these several variables, it is very difficult to attract voluntary and direct participation from spectators. For that reason, this work’s aim could be fully achieved when it is installed in territory of actual military camps with a more specified manual; or it could remain demonstrating an inadequate situation of internal system which lacks minimum privacy in shared community spaces.

Nevertheless, what we should not overlook is that this installation is not a futile attempt to give the viewers to have a certain experience even though it did not lead any actual masturbating actions. When one enters into the room and turns the light on, one could have a feeling that the empty room welcomes her or him and the motor sound surrounds the person. Simultaneously, the “ENGAGED” sign of its outside blinks to inform that the room is occupied and a plaster hand figure starts moving pointing at the below. The shape of the slightly loose grip externalizes the act of masturbation regardless of whether the action happens or not; also, the person in the space is able to listen to the machine hand’s masturbating sound. In other words, the installation clearly contains a stimulation point. The stimulation becomes a different experience at the exterior of the space where audio-visual aspects are intersected. As a result, the space is not entirely closed internally and externally.

Minwook An’s previous performances and installations take an audience as a subject and the artist himself does not completely disappear. The status of the artist is a director, included in the work, who underlines the existence of the audience who is not entirely engaged in the piece before the artist intervenes. In this regard, the work is not categorized in public art targeting a particular social hierarchy or profession groups. It rather relocates individuals repressed by collective consciousness; it also reveals a discordant community's gap between groups which consist of colorless dependent members and people of multiple personality. In this context, the subtle presence of the artist operates as a coordinator who reconstructs and reassembles diverse layers of the public.

At the exhibition, The City of Homeless in 2016, An presented a piece, <Four Things about -less> (2016) visualizing a state of ‘-less/without’ which eliminates a word, ‘Home’, from ‘Homeless’ in order to speak about ‘Homeless’ stories. He recreated actual physical elements of a house such as staircases, walls or floors and their opacity into transparent acrylic structures resulted in bizarre spaces unrelated to their original function. In other words, An built a sole house which embraces fragments of an useless floating space.

He separated the compound into two words, ‘Home’ and ‘Less’, to unveil an abstract and physical aspect of the word rather than focusing on its practical and sociologic tendency. If we perceive the work as an approach ultimately allowing the spectators to face and learn a situation of ‘Homeless’, it primarily shows an allegory of absurdity in social phenomena, secondly it escapes from a conventional sociological representation, and lastly, its essential condition is only a direct experience of the audience. The similar pattern occurs in the case of <Master Baby>; dealing with a deficient condition of the military’s present circumstances, An maintains an attitude which draws an experiential factor from social states of affairs and to have a direct influence on the viewers, instead of giving a critical viewpoint directly connected to proposing an alternative.

The individual’s masturbation which could have happened (did not happen in fact) is treated as a private and invisible realm. Records of its details are mere traces in a litter bin. Therefore, the work illustrates an insufficient situation for soldiers and allegorically reveals a closed culture suppressing an individual’s sexual activity (a masturbating space experimenting an impossibility of masturbating), rather than providing a space for masturbation. An creates a space inside of an exhibition space (a closed space) to scrutinize a status of spectators in a contemporary art museums reverted to a single autonomous existence and to create another situation of absurdity. I am in the room, but I am also exposed to the people at the outside of the room at the same time due to the operation of the machine hand and the light sign installed onto the exterior of the space for, paradoxically, a purpose of protecting the individual(=I)’s privacy. In the end, the position of an innocent singular person (a viewer) is collapsed and an implicit relationship between each of them appears.
